IS THE pen mightier than the brush? It was not really an issue when two of Track+Signal’s distinguished contributors – Dr Philip Laird (left) and award-winning cartoonist Geoff Hook OAM – met for the first time at the RACV Club in Melbourne. Rather, the occasion brought forth a mutual admiration of different talents.
Dr Laird, a regular comment writer for Track+Signal, had expressed a desire on several occasions to catch up with Mr Hook, whose cartoons regularly accompany Dr Laird’s comment pieces.
Mr Hook has had a career spanning nearly 30 years, having begun with the Melbourne-Sun, which later merged with the Herald to become the Melbourne Herald Sun. He started his drawing career with the Hobart Mercury.
Among many honours he received the award for Best Political Cartoon at The International Cartoon Festival at Knokke-Heist, Belgium, and in 1991 he won the award for Best Press Cartoon at the same festival.
Dr Laird of the University of Wollongong is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and was the inaugural national chairman of the Railway Technical Society of Australasia.
As two of the most distinguished practitioners in their fields, the pair complement each other perfectly.
